At Curtain Call, in our Peripatetic Speech & Drama lessons we teach the LAMDA syllabuses.

LAMDA is one of the UK’s oldest and most respected awarding bodies. They have been offering practical examinations in communication and performance subjects for over 130 years. In this time, their qualifications have helped hundreds of thousands of candidates of all ages and abilities to develop lifelong skills.

LAMDA exams are about achievement – recognising and rewarding the endeavours of each individual – but they are also about empowerment. Our ultimate aim is to provide all people with the opportunity to develop the life skills they need to be a success: attributes such as self-confidence and the ability to communicate clearly and present ideas.

At the heart of LAMDA examinations is the recognition that their qualifications are for everyone. Across the globe, their examinations unite learners of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and cultures in enthusiasm for the English language and a desire to develop skills for life.

Curtain Call School of Speech & Drama can come into your school to teach drama classes to students individually or in small groups. Students attend these drama classes just as they would attend a peripatetic music lesson. We work with schools to organise a weekly timetable of sessions. We fit around your school timetable in order to offer students Solo 20min sessions or 30min Duo/Group sessions during their normal school day (including breaktime & lunchtime)

During our peripatetic drama classes Curtain Call prepares students for one of the following LAMDA Exams:

  • Acting

  • Speaking Verse and Prose

  • Public Speaking

  • Reading for Performance

  • Musical Theatre

LAMDA Exams run from Grades 1 to 8, like music grades. Below Grade 1, they also have Entry Level and Introductory Exams, these are suitable for children aged 8 years and below.

Any student wishing to take a LAMDA exam need to ensure that they have read the following information. These guides are not specific to LAMDA but are based on our knowledge of teaching LAMDA for more than 14 years, as well as the ability of the student. Exams are accredited by the Government and Level 3 exams also gain UCAS points that can be used for university or drama school entry.

Solo Exam Age Restrictions (this is a guide only)

  • Introductory Level: Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 (minimum age 5 years)

  • Entry Level: Year 3 and Year 4 (minimum age 8 years)

  • Level 1: Grade 1, Grade 2 & Grade 3 Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 (minimum age 9 years)

  • Level 2: Grade 4 & Grade 5 Year 8 and Year 9 (minimum age 12 years)

  • Level 3: Grade 6, Grade 7 & Grade 8 Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 (minimum age 14 years)

We recommend LAMDA Exam classes to secondary students who: are keen actors and want to polish their performance skills love drama but do not necessarily want to take a drama GCSE or A Level are less likely to gain high grades in mainstream subjects and want to increase their chances of getting a good college or university place. LAMDA Exams gain UCAS points. perform well academically but need to improve self-presentation skills and gain confidence at speaking in public. Presenting work in seminars is an increasingly important component of university education.

We recommend LAMDA Exam Classes to Primary students who: have a gift for the dramatic, need to improve their confidence skills, enjoy reading or need to develop their use of spoken English. LAMDA can also help in the development of empathy and understanding of different viewpoints, be an added physical exercise for their week and develop memory.
